A Q&A With Glenn Thompson

Forest Landowner Magazine chatted with Pennsylvania Congressman Glenn Thompson, who chairs the Congressional subcommittee that oversees forestry.

Glenn "G.T.” Thompson has spent much of his life in the woods. The U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania’s 5th congressional district since 2009, Thompson grew up working in his father’s sporting goods store and has spent more than four decades involved with the Boy Scouts of America. When Thompson, now 53, arrived at Penn State University, he figured he’d pursue a degree in environmental resource management from the school’s department of agriculture. Instead he fell in love with the healthcare field while working in a nursing home to pay for tuition and spent 28 years as a therapist, rehabilitation services manager, and licensed nursing home administrator. He never strayed too far from the forest, which plays a prominent role in his Central Pennsylvania district. His Congressional duties include chairing the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy & Forestry. Earlier this year he was the Republican sponsor of the Forest Products Fairness Act, which could have a far-reaching positive impact on the forestry industry. Forest Landowner magazine recently spoke with Thompson about the state of the industry and where he sees it headed.
